Exploring North, Cornwall: A Visual Journey Through Stunning Coastal Scenery
North Cornwall. The lesser known hidden gem to its well-known Southern counterpart. Rugged coastline, crystal clear Atlantic waters and miles of rolling countryside with the quaintest little towns nestled in between. It’s the perfect, quieter getaway. Spend your days surfing, taking long walks on the beach or hiking over the breath taking cliffs.
I hope to inspire you to take a trip to North Cornwall. I have visited this area five times, so I see myself as quite the Cornish pro at this point. Read on for my recommendations for a trip that will have you coming back for more.
Crackington Haven
I had to start here. One of my favourite places in the whole world. Its secluded, rugged and outstandingly beautiful. You feel a bit like you are on the precipice of the UK – in the best way. A gorgeous little bay, surrounded by the volcanic cliff faces – there are several paths you can take that lead you up to the cliff for the most amazing view of Crackington and beyond.
There is not much in the way of shops, but there is an amazing little café with the best crab sandwiches and a pub with a stretching view out over the bay.
I even have the cutest air bnb recommendation for you here.
Boscastle
Picture this, a charming, witchy village nestled between the surfer town of Bude and fishing port of Padstow. The full force of the Atlantic Coast whipping through the historic, cobbled streets. Streets that seem quiet, except for the distance hum of a accordion. You look over to see a local pub called the Cobweb Inn and spot a Cornish Folk Band playing through the window, whilst listeners gather by the roaring fire.
Okay I got carried away…but I hope I painted the picture well. This place feels truly magical, with stunning stone houses on every turn and rich in supernatural history, with the Museum of Witchcraft and Magic being a favourite among tourists. If you love exploring quaint places with witchy pasts, this is the place for you.
If you are looking to treat yourself to a fine dining seafood meal, then check out The Rocket Store. We had a delicious meal, celebrating our engagement, in the tiny but impressive restaurant. The dishes are small plates, cooked in an open kitchen and they come out as they are ready, so perfect for sharing and getting a taste of everything!
Padstow
Lastly, the quaint town of Padstow! It is truly a joy to be in the lively but quintessential Cornish fishing town. With plenty of shops to browse, selling wonderful handmade souvenirs, adjoined with popular, contemporary restaurants, Padstow is the perfect day out.
With a harbour central to the town with the buildings circled around the outside, its a perfect spot to enjoy a beer in the sun, some local mussels or an ice cream from one of the many parlours.
You can also take wildlife boat trips out from the harbour. I’m talking small speed boat trips ! We had the most amazing time, on a very rough and windy day, which added to the fun in my opinion! We saw seals, seabirds and on our way back we made a detour and saw a pod of about ten dolphins. They came up to the boat and were playing in the waves around us for half an hour until we had to leave, it was honestly magical. Of course you are never guaranteed, but the tour company Padstow Sealife Safaris have a great reputation. My top tip is to book an early morning trip, as that is when dolphins feed and you are most likely to see them.
That concludes my North Cornwall must-see spots. Please let me know if you visit any, or, do you have any places to add?
